: : I'm choosing Pandora over television.
: : I'm eating this for breakfast.  The most delicious "breakfast" bar I've ever had, paired up with Starbucks blonde (french) roast, Cinnabon creamer, & Reddiwip. 
: : I'm considering that I've undone anything "natural" about the ingredients in my breakfast by adding the creamer & whipped cream to my coffee. 
: : I'm wondering how we ever survived without the internet.  Look, that's how you make it.
: : I'm already thinking about the next meal and wondering what Hannah will pick for her lunch plate.  I'm smiling as I get such enjoyment out of watching her pick healthy foods for her and AJ to eat and love it that she understands a healthy lunch includes something from each food group.
: : I'm amazed that until a few months ago, I had never steamed a carrot.  And now, it's a weekly event.
: : I'm laughing about how much shouting AJ did this morning and wondering what it will sound like when he starts to use words.  He's just so passionate about everything.  He really is.
: : I'm sitting at my kitchen island and despite the clutter around me, I'm thinking how beautiful and warm my kitchen is.  (I'll post a picture sometime when It's clean)
: : I'm thankful for such an amazing husband that hung these cabinets, installed this wood floor (well until he threw his back out), and installed my beautiful tile backsplash.
: : I'm excited about upcoming projects, including installing flooring in what will soon be my very very very own studio space.
: : I'm anticipating much more creating going on in my studio this summer.
: : I'm loving today!

it's that time again

Yes it's that time again.  The time where in the midst of busyness (finishing a basement, training for a 20k to name a couple) I add fashioning a quilt to the mix.  Why not?!  This time it becomes a major priority because it's for my little man for his first birthday coming up at the end of the month!


I promised myself even before having children that there were 2 things I wanted to promise to make for them:  #1 toddler size quilt (ideally given on first birthday) & #2 baby book (ideally given on second birthday).  Anything beyond this promise is fluff. You see, being the middle child that I am, they must have equal items made from mama and in my mind a quilt and a baby book are quite special, not too much for me to commit to, and not too much of an annoyance to for them to hang on to for...well, forever.  My plan gives me one year after having a baby to figure out a theme for their room and make a coordinating quilt, during which time I also write out entries month by month for the baby book.  Then I have the second year to print out photos and assemble the baby book.  It worked pretty good for Hannah, so hoping it does this time around as well.


This little quilt for AJ will be made from daddy's old shirts.  Daddy must have quite an aggressive elbow, as he eventually wears a hole right through the sleeve of his dress shirts.  I have been saving them up for many years now, hoping that someday I would need them for a little boy quilt!  They are worn and soft already.  Perfect for my little man.

my recipe box: granola cereal

Little by little at our house I am trying to find good recipes made from single, natural ingredients to replace packaged items from our pantry. I have a long way to go.  The convenience factor of a frozen pizza or macaroni & cheese often wins.  But, even with small steps we are improving and it makes me so happy! I like the challenge of discovering recipes for foods that have been packaged for so long now that it seems unheard of to make yourself. I mean who makes their own cereal? I would like to take this to the extreme in the years to come and hope to eventually become somewhat sustainable; making my own breads, jelly, growing vegetables, etc. (I guess we’ll keep on buying milk though because Dan doesn't think he would ever choose to milk a cow. Ever. Sigh.)

What I am finding out is that when I make something myself:

1. Grocery shopping is easier and faster because you can get almost everything you need by shopping the perimeter of the store!
2. I save money
3. I eat healthier foods and in turn maintain a healthier weight
4. It tastes better
5. I appreciate it more

I’m sure there are even more reasons out there. I’m hoping to post under the "My Recipe Box" label more often, and especially this summer as we discover new favorites. This one we call “Crunchies” at our house and Hannah loves it along with helping me prepare it. Oh how great she is at “helping” me stir the ingredients together (Yes, it flies out of the pan more often than not, and for that reason our puppy Max is also a fan).

I have always loved granola cereals but usually pass on them at the store because they always seem expensive. The ingredients for this recipe are very simple and inexpensive. Hannah eats this often for breakfast with milk and fruit or she also loves a spoonful stirred in with her yogurt. It goes well with fresh fruits: blueberries, raspberries, bananas, peaches, raisins, and even chocolate chips as I discovered during a late night craving when I was pregnant with AJ! 


Granola Cereal
5 C. Oats (we prefer “Old Fashioned” but you can use anything)
½ C. Brown Sugar
¼ tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1/3 C. Honey
1/3 C. Vegetable Oil
1/3 C. Water
1 tsp. Vanilla

Mix oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon together in a lightly greased roasting pan or baking sheet. In a separate bowl stir liquid ingredients. Pour over dry ingredients mixing until well coated. Bake at 325 for 40 minutes total, taking out to stir every 10 minutes. Cool and then store in an airtight container. I don’t know how long this preserves, we never let it sit that long!

the tapestry


Have you ever had to do something and you aren't really sure why, but something within tells you to do it?  Time passes, maybe even years, and one day out of the blue it hits you.  You know why.  It didn't really make sense at the time...but it does now...

During my post college graduation/pre-marriage years whenever I made a trip home to Sioux City, I frequently found myself in a difficult position - standing in front of a cardboard box of things my mother no longer wanted.  The divorce was final, the house I lived in for nearly my first twenty one years was sold, and as if that wasn't enough closure there was still what was now considered "junk" for my sisters and me to go through.  It was fairly traumatic, those boxes and boxes of things that remained after 26 years of marriage; family photos to split up, wedding gifts to separate, and those gifts that had been given to both parents - who gets to keep what?  Oh and don't forget the box full of wedding day memorabilia and wedding photo albums - I guess we can just burn that entire box?  Yes, we will light the old unity candle, the same one that my parents had saved and burned every year on their anniversary for all those years, and we will use that to start it all on fire.  Seemed appropriate to me.

In all of those boxes, aside from the family photos, there wasn't much of anything that I wanted.  It was hard enough to pick up the pieces and move on as things were, I didn't need any additional reminders sitting on my shelf.  There was one thing that tugged enough at my heartstrings to make it to my save pile.  It was a music box.  The beautifully carved wood box looked familiar but I didn't have a strong recollection, maybe because it was broken?  The crank would not turn, and lifting the lid did not produce a sound.  It came all the way from Switzerland, a souvenir my dad had picked up for my mom on their trip to Europe very early in their marriage.  I saw it and my heart hurt, how sad my dad would be to see it in the "junk" pile.  A label on the bottom read "Edelweiss."  Oh my, another dagger - the song my father sang to his baby girls to rock them to sleep.  I took it with me and packed it away in a box.  Maybe someday I would fix it.

It didn't resurface again until after our wedding.  I found it while unpacking our boxes into our first apartment.  It made it from the box to the desktop, I thought I might as well take it in to the clock repair place at the mall and see if they could get it working again.  About a week and forty dollars later and it was fully restored.  I wound the crank, opened the lid and peered through the glass plate to see the working parts and hear the tune, it was almost as beautiful and soothing as my father's voice.  I badly wanted to show it to my dad.  Or maybe give it to him?  But I just didn't know, it felt awkward.  I didn't want to upset him.  Back into the box it went.  

It stayed in that box and traveled with us to our move to Johnston, and finally Polk City.  We didn't find a place for it until we were preparing what is now Hannah's room.  The music box seemed fitting up on her bookshelf.  And there it sat, untouched for several years, until I needed it a few weeks ago.
We misplaced the blue musical elephant that we had been using to help soothe AJ to sleep, and I needed something else to play a few minutes of music for him as he drifted off to sleep.  The music box!  How I hadn't thought of this even before he was born was beyond me.  I turned the crank and "Edelweiss" began to play.  But it wasn't just a music box, or any song.  It was my father, his Papa Jim, gently rocking him to sleep.  And in a way, each time I turn the music box on as he falls asleep, somehow it eases the pain of them not getting to meet on this side of heaven.  It makes perfect sense now.

Why we do what we do, is it always just a coincidence or a gut feeling?  I don't think so.  I told my very wise mother-in-law this story and she was reminded that our lives on earth can be compared to a tapestry.  God may give us glimpses of the tapestry while we are still on earth, but we won't really see it's beauty until we are in heaven.  I hadn't heard this comparison before, but I love it.  I have loved working with quilts for a number of years now and it reminds me of that.  There is a bigger picture, a creator, and even though we may not always understand or be able to see the way the pieces are going to fit together we can trust that some day they will and our tapestry, our work of art will be complete.

tenth anniversary

Can that possibly be right?  Ten years...yes...TEN YEARS!  Ten years ago today I married my best friend.  I remember it like it was yesterday...


My dress was white with a very large train, very poofy and all that on the bottom, with a long train.  At the dress shop, I thought about scaling back a little because it was almost obnoxiously heavy but it was the one.  Dan hadn't seen me or my dress until my dad and I stood at the back of the church at the start of the ceremony.  It really made pictures complicated but I didn't care.  I wanted that moment, and even today I know it wouldn't have been the same to see him before the ceremony.  I got butterflies when I saw Dan.  He looked so handsome in his tuxedo with the classic white vest and white bow tie.  I remember taking my dad's arm, and with a big exhale we began to walk.  I wasn't nervous, what I do remember was sheer concentration; to stay as emotionally steady as I possibly could, to kick my dress out as I walked so that I didn't trip, oh and to smile.  

Our wedding day was filled with wonderful moments like this which we treasure so much now.  It was quite a day!  Looking through photos from our wedding day and our experiences over the last ten years has brought back so many happy memories.  The wedding was one perfect day filled with magical moments, but it doesn't even compare to the moments we have had over the past ten years.  I loved Dan a lot back when we said our vows, but I love him so much more now.  Every day I love him more!  God has provided me with such a wonderful husband, I am so blessed and so thankful to have such a loving and supportive husband.  

Before we jump into the next ten here are some pictures of us over the last ten.  I wish I could have included everything but there is just so much!  I managed to find a handful of pics of us together (I learned that we don't take near enough of the two of us) from some of our big moments over the last ten years.  You may wonder why some of them are a bit blurry.  Well, it's because I had to take a digital picture of the print to put them here.  Yes, that's right, we were married before digital cameras really existed.  If you didn't think ten years is a long time, I bet you do now.  To our friends and family, you have all been a huge part of our last ten years and our happy memories - we love you!  Here's to the next ten!

wonderful fall

Christmas is sneaking in.  First I bought Christmas hand soaps for the bathrooms last weekend and thought we might as well start using them now since they usually last well beyond the holiday season anyway.  Nope, no harm in that.  Then after a heavy and wet first snowfall that (sadly) melted same day last week, we noticed others putting up their lights on our street.  Two things came to mind:  a) I'm way behind this year & b) I'm sure the weather will be fabulous the day we put ours up.  The light boxes made it from the attic to the hallway and as I stare at them now I can't help but think that before Christmas is in full swing I should take a brief second to think about what a wonderful fall it has been.  We have so much to be thankful for.

Here are some pictures of one my favorite fall memories this year when my little family took a drive out to Center Grove Orchard.  As you can see Dan took some really great pictures.  It was fun for everyone!
